Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (or D.R.U.G.S for short!) have recently been in the UK in support of their recently released self titled album. We caught up with drummer Aaron Stern, before their Nottingham Rock City show, to talk about the album, the tour and what the rest of 2011 has in store for the band…
So, it’s the second to last date of your tour, how has it been?
The shows have been great, I mean, they have just surpassed our expectations, our album only came out a week and a half ago and we are playing these shows that are mostly sold out and I really can’t express enough love for the UK right now. You know, I’ve always taken it for granted, coming out here and this time round we’ve been so stoked to be here and then getting the response we’ve been getting from the fans, it’s just been unreal.
Has there been a stand out show for you so far?
You know, we have had some really mad shows. Glasgow was particularly crazy!
Glasgow is always crazy, some of our CtrlAltRock crew represent in Glasgow, so we know how they roll!
Right? Also, last night was amazing, we were in Birmingham. They have literally all been so great. It is really hard to pick any two, but those stand out the most. Other than that, Newcastle was good, I thought it was a beautiful place. Even Leeds too, that was great to visit.
You just managed to escape the snow up north as well, I hear it was snowing again in Glasgow!
See, that I don’t miss! I am from New York City and we have had more than our fair share of snow recently.
So you mentioned the album came out recently, whats the reaction been like here and back home?
Well back home we literally left just after the album dropped, but the reaction we had seen from doing signings and radio stations was phenomenal, I think the real test for us is going out on the Alternative Press tour when we get back from the UK and that is going to say a lot. For us its great to go online and see that people are saying the records great is awesome, but really we just love getting out there and seeing the reaction, to have people singing our songs back to us, it’s going to be the full comeback.
When it came to writing the album, how did that work? Obviously you have all come from successful and established bands, how did the whole process evolve?
Well yeah we did, the main songwriters are Craig and Matt, but as a group we sat down alongside John Feldman, our producer and you know he was great…
He’s awesome! He’s produced some great albums…
He really has! And he’s been in bands for years, he’s from our scene and it was almost like having another member with us. He helped us so much, he got involved with the songs and fine tuned everything and it was a great process. What’s great about this band is you have five guys who are five leaders, so at times it was more productive for us to all step back to allow it to grow.
Did you find that because you all had already done your time in other bands, it made it a lot clearer which direction you wanted to go in?
Yeah, we felt like we were all in the same ship, sailing in the same direction, it’s when everyone starts rowing in different directions you go nowhere. We were all on board with it, that was the whole point. Craig put together a band of people who weren’t going to fall into the usual shit that a lot of bands do, all the fighting, the bullshit, resenting each other. He put together a band that was going to have longevity, with people who have had experience and are ready to do this for real.
What the name D.R.U.G.S, we were wondering if the acronym came first, or if the name, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows came first? It’s seems too much of a perfect coincidence!
Well to begin with, it was kind of a joke, Craig sent in demos to the label under DRUGS and then when it came down to put a name together, it was really important to us that we were going to come up with a name that people would remember, that would be provocative and make people think. So about two months later our management were like, do you know what? We really like DRUGS! And we were like, yeah, so do we! But Craig was like, I don’t just want it to be DRUGS, I want it to have some more artistic integrity, so why not make it an acronym and make it Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows.
I was looking on the web as well and it’s definitely sparked debate, although I do think some may be missing the point, I read one thing where the guy was adamant it was encouraging kids to do drugs….
Well we really wanted it to challenge people’s way of thinking and put a whole new spin on the word, it was nice for us to climb out of the hole of what people would assume a band with a name like DRUGS would be like and represent and I think we are doing that, I think now the music is out people can see that.
We spoke about you going out on the AP tour earlier, that’s straight after this tour? Have you toured with any of the bands on it before?
Yep, its straight after this and it’s alongside our buddies Black Veil Bride, Matt is really good friends with them and there is also VersaEmerge, Conditions and I See Stars.
It’s a really long tour, isn’t it?
Yeah, it’s a full seven weeks and then after that in the summer we have Warped, that got announced today.
Anything else planned for 2011, is it just a full touring year?
Yeah pretty much, I just wanted to be out on the road this year and I know the rest of the guys do to. We have put together this record we are all extremely proud of it and we want it to be heard by as many people as possible. It’s the pinnacle of what we’ve created and we just wanted it to get in people’s heads! We are going where ever it takes us and that after that, we’ll start writing a new record.
When you are not touring, what kind of stuff do you like getting up to?
Ahh, I just like to hang out, I have a fiancée so I just like to get all homey and like do things like…
Yeah, homey and nesting! Besides that, being musicians we still just love to play to chill out and also me and Craig are really into our sports.
What kind of sports are you into?
U.S. sports really, baseball, football, that kind of thing.
American Football is starting to take off over here quite a lot now…
Really, that’s awesome! Actually, I heard my team the New York Giants were over playing the Dolphins a couple of years ago, I saw it on TV.
So, I know you have to get ready for tonight, so before we go, is there anything else you’d like to add?
Just I’d like to thank all our fans and everyone that has come out to support our band, we are so grateful for all you are doing and we’ll be over to see you again soon!
